McNairy County was formed from part of Hardin on 8 October 1823 and named for John McNairy, a Southwest Territory judge appointed by George Washington. The original seat was Purdy, which turned down railroad investment in 1855 and declined; the seat moved to the railroad town of Selmer in 1890. Purdy still appears in tornado path descriptions. Twenty-six thousand people live on five hundred and sixty-three square miles of rolling hills and flatland.
This is where the Hatchie starts. McNairy is the first county on the state's list of designated Hatchie scenic-river counties, which means the river's upper reach is here before it widens into the swamp river it becomes downstream. Big Hill Pond State Park covers four thousand one hundred and thirty-eight acres in the south of the county; its namesake pond was dug in 1853 as a borrow pit for a railroad levee. Coon Creek, in the same part of the county, preserves marine shells and mosasaur remains around seventy million years old.
Pickwick Electric Cooperative serves the entire county — the whole of McNairy, plus parts of Chester, Hardeman and Hardin and two Mississippi counties, about twenty-one thousand meters over nearly twenty-five hundred miles of line. That is one of very few electric assignments in West Tennessee that can be stated for a whole county without checking an address. The Selmer Utility Division, running since 1 January 1934, supplies natural gas, water and sewer to parts of McNairy, Chester, Hardin and Hardeman.

Permits and licensing in McNairy County
McNairy County has opted out of the residential permit program, and so have Michie and Stantonville in their own right. Selmer and Adamsville are exempt; Selmer's building inspector on North Second Street issues zoning, codes, building, sign and floodplain permits. Bethel Springs, Eastview, Finger, Guys, Ramer, Enville and Milledgeville all take the state permit. There is no county codes department. Six different regimes inside one county line.
There is no Home Improvement license requirement in McNairy County, and the state contractor's license applies above twenty-five thousand dollars. This is the highest-impact tornado county on the site and the reason to check a license here is not theoretical. On 31 March 2023 an EF-3 with a hundred and fifty-five mile-an-hour winds ran eighty-six miles through Bethel Springs, Purdy and Adamsville over an hour and thirty-three minutes, killing nine and injuring twenty-three. On the night of 2 and 3 April 2025 another EF-3 ran through Selmer at a hundred and sixty miles an hour, killing five and injuring fourteen. State estimates put McNairy's tornado and flood damage that spring at about thirty million dollars.
