Forty-five road miles from Jackson down US 45, this is the closest of the southern county seats and the natural base for the area around it. Adamsville is ten miles east, Bethel Springs six north, Savannah eighteen and Bolivar twenty-two northwest. The run is quick by the standards of this desk, and the town is compact once you are in it. Nothing about the access is difficult, which is unusual enough down here to be worth saying plainly.

The 2025 tornado track runs through the town itself, and buildings on it are the ones most likely to carry a recent layer of work over older structure. The older core near the courthouse holds the age-related failures, and the low ground along Cypress Creek holds the water-related ones. Beyond the town limits the addresses are rural and the same events produced a different result — outbuildings, long driveways and utility runs that took longer to restore than anything in town did.

The utility division here supplies parts of four counties, which produces a genuine confusion: a bill from it does not mean an address is inside this town, and the town limit is what decides whether a rebuild is inspected by the town's own inspector. Selmer became the county seat in 1890 because it had a railroad and Purdy did not, so its oldest fabric is late-Victorian rather than antebellum. The town has been rebuilt in parts twice in three years by weather rather than by choice, which means a meaningful share of the current roofs, windows and interior finishes are very recent work over much older structure.
