At forty road miles out this is the shortest run of the southern towns, straight down the Highway 45 corridor from Jackson. Selmer is six miles south, Adamsville twelve east, Henderson twenty-two north and Bolivar twenty-five west. There is no difficult access here and no river to cross. What the distance does mean is that a job is still a committed trip rather than a quick look, so the first visit gets used to settle the whole scope instead of to have a look and come back.

Losses here follow the 2023 tornado track more closely than they follow anything else. The path ran through this town and on toward Purdy — the county's original seat, which lost the courthouse to the railroad town of Selmer in 1890 and still turns up in tornado path descriptions — and from there to Adamsville. Houses on that line carry recent construction; houses a few streets off it do not, and their failures are the ordinary ones of old low frame housing. Away from both, the rural addresses are scattered enough that each is its own case.

Two utility facts are worth writing down here, and they are opposite in character. The electricity is certain: one cooperative serves the entire county, so there is never a question about which meter belongs to whom. The water is not. The town publishes no supplier, the Selmer Utility Division serves parts of the county, and the only reliable answer is the one printed on the bill. Knowing which applies to your address before a pipe fails rather than after is the single most useful thing on this page.

Bethel Springs is a small town of a few hundred people with old, low, mostly frame housing on crawl spaces. It is also the lead-named impact town of the March 2023 tornado, which means a significant proportion of what is standing here now is reconstruction — and reconstruction in a county that has opted out of residential permitting is not, as a rule, inspected.

Bethel Springs incorporated on 1 November 1870 and covers 2.23 square miles at 479 feet, run by a mayor, vice mayor and three aldermen with four municipal employees — the smallest payroll of any town on this site. The town supplies water, sewer, gas and refuse regardless. The population has been close to flat for forty years, off a 1980 peak of 873: 763 in 2000, 718 in 2010, 742 in 2020. The Presbyterian congregation on Third Avenue dates to 1829 and is the oldest still meeting in McNairy County; its 1893 building is on the National Register.
