Hardin County was established in November 1819 and named for Colonel Joseph Hardin Sr, a Revolutionary War veteran who sat in the State of Franklin's assembly. Savannah began as Rudd's Ferry in 1829 and took its present name in 1850. Twenty-seven thousand people live on five hundred and seventy-seven square miles of land. The county is divided into two nearly equal halves by the Tennessee River, with bottomland on both banks, and it is the only county in West Tennessee that sits on both sides of it.
Pickwick Landing Dam is here. Work started in 1934, the gates closed on 8 February 1938 and the first generator came online that August. Pickwick Lake covers forty-three thousand acres with nearly four hundred and ninety miles of shoreline, runs between four hundred and thirteen and four hundred and fourteen feet in summer and down to four hundred and eight in winter, and extends fifty-three miles upstream into Alabama. The distinction that matters: Savannah, Crump and Saltillo are downstream of the dam, on the head of Kentucky Lake, not on Pickwick.
The Savannah gauge has flood stage at three hundred and seventy feet and major flood at three hundred and eighty-eight, with eighty-one crests recorded since 1897. The record is 401.2 feet on 21 March 1897; the modern record is 395.3 feet on 26 February 2019, the third highest ever measured there. February 2025 reached moderate flood stage at 375.16 feet. Permits and licensing in Hardin County
Hardin County has opted out of the residential permit program. Savannah has not — the city's Community Development department employs three state-certified building inspectors, with electrical inspections handled by Tennessee Valley Electric Cooperative and limited mechanical and plumbing inspections by the city utility department. Adamsville is also listed exempt. Crump has opted out in its own right, and Saltillo and Milledgeville take the state permit. Four different answers inside one county.

Shiloh National Military Park is here, covering the battlefield of 6 and 7 April 1862, which produced twenty-three thousand seven hundred and forty-six casualties. On 31 March 2023 an EF-3 crossed the county; on 3 April 2025 another ran twenty-nine miles through McNairy and Hardin, killing five and injuring fourteen.
