Crockett County was established in 1871 and named for David Crockett — frontier humorist, soldier, state legislator, congressman and defender of the Alamo, which is also the name of the county seat. Fourteen thousand people live on two hundred and sixty-six square miles. It is the youngest county on this site after Chester and, in one specific way, the most unusual.
Crockett County has essentially no surface water at all — two tenths of a square mile across the whole county, the only one on this site of which that is true. There is no river frontage, no reservoir and no lake. The practical consequence is that almost nothing here is a flood loss in the ordinary sense. The water that damages buildings in Crockett County comes out of pipes, off roofs and up through slabs, which is a different set of problems with a different diagnostic order.
The Crockett County Public Utility District, on North Bells Street at Alamo, has expanded over sixty-five years from serving the town of Alamo to covering Gadsden and the Crossroads, Cairo and Cypress communities, and some addresses across the line in Madison and Dyer counties. It is independent of county government. Electricity is either Gibson Electric Membership Corporation or Forked Deer Electric Cooperative; both list Crockett in their territory and neither publishes a town-by-town split.
