Gibson County was established on 21 October 1823 and named for Colonel John H. Gibson of Bedford County, who fought in the War of 1812, the Natchez campaign of 1813 and the Creek Wars. Fifty thousand people live on six hundred and three square miles, which makes it the most populous county in this dispatch zone. Trenton is the seat, but Milan and Humboldt are both larger, and Medina is growing faster than either.
This is inland West Tennessee: no Mississippi frontage, no Tennessee River, nine tenths of a square mile of water in six hundred square miles of land. The North Fork of the Forked Deer rises near Medina in the southeast of the county. Like almost every stream in this basin it was channelized for farmland in the middle of the twentieth century, which means it carries water off quickly and delivers the problem downstream rather than holding it here.
Five separate organizations sell electricity inside this county line. Milan Department of Public Utilities covers Milan and parts of Gibson, Carroll and Madison. Humboldt Utilities runs electric, gas and water inside Humboldt. Trenton Light and Water serves about twenty-four hundred customers in Trenton. Gibson Electric Membership Corporation takes the balance of the county, and the Weakley County Municipal Electric System reaches down into Bradford and rural northeast Gibson. Nobody should be guessing which one to call.

Permits and licensing in Gibson County
Milan runs its own Building and Codes department on the 2018 International Codes series, adopted effective 12 February 2021, with the energy code excepted. Humboldt has a city building inspector. Gibson, Kenton, Rutherford and Yorkville take the state residential permit. Trenton's and Medina's arrangements are not published anywhere we could find, and Medina is the fastest-growing town in this zone, which makes that gap worth closing before a job starts rather than after.
No Home Improvement license is required in Gibson County. The state contractor's license applies above twenty-five thousand dollars. The Milan Army Ammunition Plant — twenty-two and a half thousand acres, fourteen hundred and fifty buildings and eight hundred and seventy-three igloos, established in 1941 — was formally deactivated on 10 April 2025, which is the largest single change to this county's economy in eighty years and will show up in its housing before it shows up anywhere else.
