Water, fire and mold damage restoration across Benton County, Tennessee

Benton County was created on 19 December 1835 and Camden established as its seat the following year. The naming is worth getting right: the county originally honoured Thomas Hart Benton, the Missouri senator, but in 1852 the legislature passed an act that kept the name while transferring the honour to David Benton, described in the act as an old and respected citizen of the county. Sixteen thousand people live on three hundred and ninety-four square miles of land and forty-one of water.

Nearly a tenth of Benton County is water, almost all of it Kentucky Lake and the Big Sandy embayment — the largest single embayment on the reservoir, with the town of Big Sandy at its head. The Big Sandy River's old channel forms several miles of the boundary with Henry County. This is the eastern end of the site's footprint and the ground shows it: the loess that is seventy feet deep at the Mississippi bluffs has effectively run out here, and what is underfoot is the Western Valley rather than the West Tennessee plain.

The Benton County Electric System, on Highway 70 East at Camden, has run since 1940 and serves more than ten thousand customers over about twelve hundred miles of line. Camden and Big Sandy each supply their own water, sewer and refuse collection. That is a simple utility picture by the standards of this site, and it means a shutoff here usually needs two phone calls rather than four.

These communities are covered and are named here instead of getting pages, because we could not find enough checkable local detail to fill one honestly. A padded page reads as padding, and that is worse than a line in a list.

No Benton County jurisdiction appears on the State Fire Marshal's residential permit list, so the state is not issuing residential permits anywhere in the county. Whether Camden or Big Sandy runs a codes department of its own is not something we could establish — the city codes page we tried returned an error — and this page says that instead of guessing. The county mayor's office is the call to make before a rebuild is quoted here.

There is no Home Improvement license requirement in Benton County, and the state contractor's license applies above twenty-five thousand dollars. Nathan Bedford Forrest State Park, twenty-five hundred and eighty-seven acres just north of Eva, takes in part of the ground fought over in the 1864 Battle of Johnsonville and includes Pilot Knob at six hundred and fifty-six feet — one of the highest points in West Tennessee and, on a site whose western end is a floodplain, a useful reminder of how much relief there is across these twenty-one counties.
