Forty road miles from Dyersburg, and this town is closer to Jackson — eighteen miles — than to the place it is dispatched from. That is worth stating plainly rather than dressing up: this is the southeastern corner of the northwestern desk, and the drive is the drive. Milan is ten miles away, Medina eight and Trenton twelve. The road is good the whole way, so the delay, when there is one, is mileage rather than conditions, and it is quoted as mileage.

Two things concentrate the losses here and they work together. The first is age: the town has been incorporated since 1866 and a great deal of its housing has never been substantially rebuilt.
