Benton County contains Camden, and what is written here was written for that address rather than for the county as a whole. Incorporated November 1838 and the seat of Benton County since 1836, with a 2025 certified population of 3,674 — up from 3,582 in 2010.

Eighty-five road miles east, at the far edge of what this desk covers, with Big Sandy twelve miles north, Huntingdon twenty-two west, Paris twenty-five north and Parsons thirty south. The route is good, and the last part of it drops off the plain into the Western Valley — the one place on this site where the drive itself tells you the ground has changed. The constraint is candidly the distance: for work needing daily attendance, the arrangement is discussed and agreed at the start rather than assumed.

Losses concentrate along the water and in the older part of town, for opposite reasons. The lakeside and embayment properties are newer, often used seasonally, and produce the losses nobody sees start. Since neither county issues residential permits outside its towns, that never surfaces as a permit problem — it surfaces on the deed, the tax notice and the insurance record. Worth adding: the county was created in December 1835 honoring Thomas Hart Benton, but an 1852 act kept the name while transferring the honor to David Benton, an old and respected citizen of it.

Camden is a county seat of about thirty-seven hundred people on the eastern edge of this site's footprint, and the ground here is different from the Delta end of it: the loess that runs seventy feet deep at the Mississippi bluffs has effectively given out, and what is underfoot is the Western Valley. Housing is mid-century and later for the most part, with lakeside property to the east on a managed reservoir.
