Fayette County was established on 29 September 1824 and named for the Marquis de Lafayette; Somerville, its seat, is named for a lieutenant killed at Horseshoe Bend ten years earlier. Forty-two thousand people are spread across seven hundred and five square miles, and eighty-one percent of them own their home — the highest owner-occupancy rate of the three counties this desk covers. La Grange, founded by 1826 and named for Lafayette's own estate, is almost entirely a listed historic district.
There is no Chickasaw Bluff in Fayette County; the bluffs are a Mississippi River feature and this county does not reach the river. What crosses it instead are two rivers going the other way. The Wolf meanders across the south of the county, and Moscow sits where its North Fork comes in. The Loosahatchie crosses the north, running past the top end of Somerville, and it has been channelized along nearly its whole length. Herb Parsons Lake, a hundred and seventy-seven acres opened to the public on 1 July 1954, is the only standing water of any size.

Permits and licensing in Fayette County
Fayette County is an exempt jurisdiction, so codes are enforced locally rather than by the state, and the Fayette County Planning Office at the county mayor's building in Somerville handles building permits and plat review. Two towns are on the state residential permit list rather than the county's: Braden and Williston. Grand Junction, in the southeast corner, sits on the Hardeman line and is described by both counties, which is worth settling before a permit is filed there.
Fayette County has no Home Improvement license requirement.
