Around the courthouse square the fabric is nineteenth-century commercial; the residential streets around it are pre-war frame and brick on crawl spaces; the highway edges are post-war and modern. The city sits close to where the Forked Deer, the Obion and the Mississippi come together, which keeps the water table high in the western half of it.
