Forty-two road miles separate downtown Memphis from the courthouse here, and the route is the Highway 51 corridor the whole way, up through Atoka, Munford and Brighton. Covington's population peaked at 9,038 in 2010 and fell to 8,663 by 2020, and its growth curve runs back through 5,801 in 1970 to 2,787 in 1900.
