Millington is one of the communities of Shelby County carrying a page of its own on this site. Incorporated city with a 2020 population of 10,582 on 22 square miles, at an elevation of 260 feet.

Seventeen road miles north of downtown by US-51 or by Navy Road, normally a fast run because most of the traffic on that corridor moves the other way at the hours we travel. The constraint here is unlike anywhere else in this batch: a large part of the daytime population is inside a naval installation, and a loss inside the gate is not a job a civilian contractor drives to. Access there is arranged, escorted and scheduled. Everything outside the gate is ordinary residential access on a mid-century street grid, which is easier than the subdivision loops further east.

The losses concentrate on the older housing west and south of the town center, where the ground falls toward the river bottoms and the crawl spaces are shallowest. Age is the driver rather than geography, with patched mid-century plumbing, original waste lines and wiring extended rather than replaced. A second concentration sits in the rental stock around the installation, where turnover means a slow problem can pass through more than one tenancy before anyone reports it. Neither pattern is common in the eastern suburbs.

Roughly a fifth of this city takes water from MLGW and the rest from the city's own wells, and the line between them follows nothing visible from the road. The meter answers it and nothing else reliably does, so knowing which utility reads yours is a short check worth doing before you need it. Electricity is MLGW across the whole county regardless. There is a quieter consequence too: the two supplies have different water chemistry, so a fixture or an appliance that behaves one way at one address may behave differently at another a street away.

Millington is a mid-century town built around a naval installation, so its housing is older than the eastern Shelby suburbs and was built for a different market — smaller footprints, shallower crawl spaces, and a good deal of 1950s and 1960s plumbing that has been patched rather than replaced. Naval Support Activity Mid-South still employs more than 7,500 people and is one of the largest single employers in Tennessee.
