The address is Germantown and the county is Shelby. Both matter here, for entirely different reasons. Settled 1825, named 1836 and incorporated 1841, with a 2020 population of 41,333 on 20 square miles.

Seventeen road miles east of downtown, usually by Poplar Avenue or TN-385, and an easy run in either direction outside peak hours. The real constraint is the tree canopy and the street width in the older residential sections, where forty years of growth has closed over roads that were laid out narrow to begin with.
