Electricity, natural gas and propane here all come from Jackson Energy Authority, a single organization holding services that are usually split among three. This city has been struck by two F4 tornadoes in living memory. On 17 January 1999 one ran sixteen miles through Jackson on a path five hundred yards wide, killing six people and injuring a hundred and six; on 4 May 2003 a second ran twenty-six miles at eight hundred and eighty yards wide and killed eleven. Those are the National Centers for Environmental Information figures, and several widely-read summaries have the two death tolls the wrong way round. Order of operations follows the fuel. The gas gets capped and the service pulled through one utility call, and only then does anyone open a ceiling, because concealed spaces above a rebuilt finish are where smoke stops behaving predictably. Where a roof or a ceiling was replaced after one of those two storms, the cavity above it may be newer, tighter and differently insulated than the one next door, so a small test opening comes before any committed demolition line. Newer subdivision on the northern edge is tighter, which keeps residue concentrated in fewer places but drives it deeper into soft contents. One city, three quite different cleaning problems, settled by the decade the house went up.
